Kolkata: Not Gang Rape, CBI files Chargesheet in RG Kar incident, accuses Sanjoy Roy for Rape and Murder

CBI on Monday has filed their first chargesheet in connection with the horrific RG Kar incident, calling it a case of rape and murder. The 45-page chargesheet has been filed before the Sealdah court, 58 days since the brutal crime killing the 31-year-old medical student of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (MCH) on August 9. While former principal of RG Kar MCH Sandip Ghosh and former Kolkata police officer Abhijit Mondal, too had been shown arrested by CBI in connection with the rape and murder of the doctor, yet the first chargesheet has only named Sanjoy Roy, ruling the gang rape theories.

Sanjoy was arrested by Kolkata Police within 12 hours after the incident came to fore but later was handed over to CBI after Calcutta High Court transferred the matter to the central agency on August 13. Kolkata Police had been in middle of a storm of protest and criticism after a section of junior doctors alleged tampering of evidences against the police. CBI too have shown both Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal arrested on charges of larger conspiracy and alleged tampering of evidences.

“The first chargesheet has the name of Sanjoy Roy. The testimonies of around 57 witnesses have been attached to the chargesheet. The investigation, however doesn’t end here with the chargesheet. There could be supplementary chargesheets filed in the future as the investigation progresses. As of now, this chargesheet reflects the incident as rape and murder”, said a CBI officer.

The chargesheet also included the findings of the polygraph test conducted on Roy. He was a civic volunteer deputed at RG Kar by the welfare department of the Kolkata Police civic volunteer, giving him unchecked access inside the building. Roy used to frequent the hospital even when the job didn’t demand. On August 9, in the wee hours he had gone inside the hospital after a night-long drinking affair. He had gone inside the seminar room where the PGT doctor was resting, raped and killed her, according to CBI, privy to the investigation and admission Roy has allegedly made. Soon after the incident, there has been speculations relying on unverified social media posts, if the doctor was gang raped and murdered. The CBI findings indicate it was a case of rape and murder, while the investigation continues exploring the possibility of any nexus and any conspiracy.
