“BJP will Form Government In Bengal In 2026…” Amit Shah Sounds Poll Bugle, Launches Membership Drive in the State
Blowing the poll bugle for the 2026 Bengal elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday set the target for the state while launching the party membership drive in Kolkata. “In 2026 Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) will form the government in the state” asserted Shah, almost in a rerun of the 2021 Bengal assembly election campaign. Shah had hit out at Mamata Banerjee’s third term government, accusing it of failing in controlling the law and order in the state and also the contention infiltration issue.
“There is state-sponsored infiltration in Bengal. Infiltration will end after BJP government is formed here. Instead of Rabindrasangeet, Bengal today is hearing the sound of bombs. The only way to stop this is by forming BJP government in Bengal”, said the Union Minister who was on a two day visit to the state. “To combat cow and coal smuggling, we need to enlist one crore BJP members in West Bengal," he further added.
Reflecting on the victory in the recently concluded Haryana polls, Shah asserted confidence in winning both Jharkhand and Maharastra polls slated in November. In 2024 Lok Sabha elections, even though BJP got restricted to 240 seats, a downslide from its 2019 performance, yet NDA formed the government at the centre. The opposition had been exerting confidence in form of INDIA bloc alliance. But the Haryana polls have boosted the confidence of the saffron party.
"Mamata didi was rejoicing after our seats were reduced in the Lok Sabha polls. Don't forget, we are a party that had two seats but aimed to remove Article 370. We don’t believe in dynasty politics and in 2026, BJP will form government with two-thirds majority in the state”, he added.
Considered as ‘Chanakya’, Shah had given the call “abki bar 200 par (Next time more than 200)” for Bengal 2021 assembly elections. In a high voltage political battle, BJP eventually got restricted to 77 seats while Trinamool Congress bettered its tally and won 213 seats in the 294 assembly. TMC’s numbers got better with every by election and BJP on the other hand had also suffered defections. Shah’s visit comes before days before the six by elections slated for November 13.
