“Heartiest congratulations my friend…”: PM Modi Congratulates Trump on “Historic Election Victory”, Looks Forward to Strengthening US-India Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated his “friend” Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 US Presidential Election. Modi lauded Trump’s "historic election victory" and expressed optimism about renewing the strong partnership between India and the United States. Donald Trump is set to become the 47th President of the United States of America.

“Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory. As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity,” wrote PM Modi in a post on social media platform “X”.

Throughout his previous tenure as a President, Trump and Modi shared a strong personal and diplomatic bond. The “Howdy, Modi!” event in Houston in 2019 and the “Namaste Trump” rally in Ahmedabad in 2020, where both leaders addressed vast crowds, showcased the mutual admiration between the two. Both leaders took a hard stance on terrorism, with a shared focus on countering threats emanating from Pakistan. Their collaboration also extended to the Indo-Pacific, where they worked together to ensure a “free and open” region in the face of China’s growing influence. However, trade relations between the two countries were at times contentious. Trump’s "America First" policy led to a series of tariff disputes, with the US imposing tariffs on Indian goods and India retaliating with its own measures.

As election results showed a clear Republican win, Trump took to the stage to address his supporters, calling the victory “magnificent” and emphasizing its significance for the American people. With the Republicans securing control of all seven battleground states, a feat considered remarkable given the Democrats’ dominance in these states during the 2020 election, Trump delivered a triumphant speech. “It is a magnificent victory for the American people,” Trump declared. Reflecting on the challenges of the campaign, including a July assassination attempt, he said, “God spared my life for a reason.” The former president framed his win as part of “the greatest political movement of all time,” vowing to help the country heal and fix critical issues like border security.

Trump also expressed gratitude toward his supporters and key figures in his campaign, including running mate JD Vance, his wife Melania Trump, and his children. He acknowledged the support of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a vocal Trump backer, and celebrated his party’s control over both the Senate and the House of Representatives. "We have made history for a reason tonight. We have achieved the most incredible political win," he said. "I want to thank the American people. I will fight for you and your family with every breath in my body,” he added.
