Wayanad Landslides: Death Toll Rises to 308 as Rescue Efforts Enter 7th Day
Rescue and relief efforts in Wayanad, Kerala, have entered their seventh day, as the region grapples with the aftermath of the devastating landslides that struck on July 30. As of August 2, the official death toll has climbed to 308, according to the latest update from the State Health Ministry.
Efforts to locate missing individuals continue with 220 bodies recovered so far. However, 180 people remain unaccounted for. In response, 53 relief camps have been established across Wayanad, accommodating 6,759 displaced individuals from 1,983 families. This includes 2,501 males, 2,677 females, 1,581 children, and 20 pregnant women.
In the aftermath of the devastating landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, a total of 16 relief camps have been set up in Meppadi and surrounding gram panchayats, comprising nine shelters and seven rescue camps. According to reports, these facilities have provided refuge to 2,514 individuals from 723 families, including 943 men, 972 women, 599 children, and six pregnant women. Additional rescue camps are operational at various locations, such as SDMLP School and D-Paul Public School.
The landslides caused widespread destruction in Chooralmala and Mundakkai, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Following the tragedy, the district administration conducted mass burials for unidentified victims, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, which included interfaith prayers.
To maintain order and ensure safety, police have intensified night patrolling in affected areas, with strict warnings against unauthorized entry. The Chief Minister's Office has stated that entry into these areas is strictly prohibited without police authorization.
