Government Issues Advisory to Media on Live Coverage of Defence Operations

In a move aimed at safeguarding national security, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to all media channels, news agencies, and social media users, urging them to refrain from providing live coverage of defence operations and the movement of security forces.
The advisory stresses the need for “utmost responsibility” while reporting on defence and security-related matters. It specifically prohibits real-time broadcasting or dissemination of visuals and source-based information related to ongoing defence operations, warning that premature disclosures could compromise operational effectiveness and endanger personnel.
Citing past incidents such as the Kargil war, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the ministry highlighted how unrestricted media coverage during sensitive events has previously had unintended adverse effects on national interests.
“It is not just a legal obligation but a moral responsibility of the media, digital platforms, and individuals to ensure that ongoing operations and the safety of forces are not compromised,” the advisory said.
The ministry reminded TV channels of their obligations under Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021. According to the rule, live coverage of anti-terrorist operations is prohibited, and media outlets are instructed to restrict their reporting to periodic briefings provided by a designated government officer until operations are concluded.
Failure to comply with these regulations, the ministry warned, would invite action under the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021.
The advisory concluded by calling on all stakeholders to maintain vigilance, sensitivity, and uphold the highest standards of journalism in the service of the nation. The guidelines were issued with the approval of the competent authority at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
