Public outcry over a video that went viral on social media, showing a Dalit woman being assaulted by a police officer in Sitamarhi, Bihar, has raised concerns about the plight of the general citizens in the hands of the police. However, in a statement, the police have stated that the officer seen in the video used his batton to disperse a crowd and restore law and order in a case related to kidnapping.

"The girl was rescued, but the two sides visited the police station and engaged in a fight among themselves outside. This led to a traffic jam on the road and the cop used his baton to disperse the crowd," said Vinod Kumar, Sub-divisional Police Officer in a video statement, clearing the air over the highly controversial video.

In the viral video, Inspector Rajkishore Singh, in-charge of the Surasand police station, was seen beating a woman with a stick in the Surasand market.

The footage captured shows him in his uniform, with a batton in his hand, beating a Dalit woman, stirring massive controversy.

The Sitamarhi Police, in a statement have announced a probe into the incident, maintaining that the police intervention was aimed at breaking a fight between two women on the street.
