Union Government Deploys Over 10,000 Additional Troops to Manipur amid Escalating Violence
The Union Government on Friday announced the deployment of over 10,000 additional soldiers to Manipur, a state that has been grappling with ongoing ethnic violence. This increase will bring the total number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies in the state to 288. The latest deployment includes 90 companies, approximately 10,800 personnel, as confirmed by Manipur's Chief Security Adviser, Kuldiep Singh.
"We are getting 90 companies of forces. A sizable portion has already reached Imphal. We have been distributing the forces to protect lives and properties of civilians and monitor vulnerable areas and points," said Singh.
He added that all areas will be covered in the coming days. "All areas will be covered in a few days. We have made foolproof arrangements. New coordination cells and joint control rooms will be set up in every district. We have reviewed those that are already functioning," he said, emphasizing the thoroughness of the security measures.
The new deployment builds on previous security reinforcements, with 50 companies of central forces announced on November 18. This round consists of 35 companies from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and 15 from the Border Security Force (BSF). These measures come in response to a recent wave of ethnic violence, particularly in the Jiribam district, which spread to other parts of the state. Earlier, on November 12, the Ministry of Home Affairs had already sent 20 additional CAPF units, including 15 from CRPF and 5 from BSF, to assist in restoring order.
