Trinamool Congress MLA from Baranagar in North 24 Paraganas has resigned from the party alleging “step brotherly” treatment to him since the raids at his residence by the Enforcement Directorate last January. ED had raided his house on January 12 in connection with a probe into alleged irregularities in the civic body recruitments. Roy has also submitted his resignation to the Bengal assembly speaker Biman Banerjee from the post of MLA.

“I have heard from several quarters that there were TMC people behind the raids at my residence. When the chief minister Mamata Banerjee was speaking inside the assembly, she had spoken against the raids at the house of Sheikh Shahjahan. I had expected she would utter about raids at my place too but she didn’t. I was deeply hurt”, said Roy on Monday morning before leaving for state assembly.

He also claimed that he was upset with the Sandeshkhali issue and also corruption within the party. While he hasn’t confirmed his next move as yet but there are speculations doing rounds of him joining BJP. This is the first resignation from TMC by a sitting MLA since the Bengal assembly elections 2021 and came ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. TMC minister Bratya Basu and leader Kunal Ghosh had reached out to him on Monday morning urging him to reconsider his decision.

Roy had recently revolted against sitting TMC MP from North Kolkata Sudip Bandyopadhyay, sources claim that BJP has recently reached out to him with the offer of candidacy from the North Kolkata Lok Sabha constituency.
