The teacher asked students to elect educated politicians but his company fired him for violating the “code of conduct”; Kejriwal asked what is his crime.
Karan Sangwan, the law teacher at the Unacademy online education technology firm has lost his job. Unacademy has fired him for violating “strict code of conduct”. His video had recently gone viral where he could be heard asking his students to vote for educated politicians and the need for that, without naming anyone in particular. His viral video in a deeply polarised political atmosphere was seen as a political statement in line with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s campaign questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualification, credentials.
“Remember one thing, next time when you vote, vote for someone educated so that you don’t suffer all of this again in your life. Choose someone who is educated, who can understand things, and not someone who only knows changes…knows how to change names…so make your decision properly,” Karan was heard saying in the viral video. After this video went viral, several right-wing and BJP sympathizers had trolled Karan on social media for “daring to make such remarks against the PM”. It’s important to mention again that Karan had not taken any names.
The news of his firing has stoked a massive political debate, if the decision was taken by the company under duress. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was among the first to question the decision and condemn it. "Is it a crime to appeal to educated people to vote? If someone is illiterate, personally I respect him. But people's representatives cannot be illiterate. This is the era of science and technology. Illiterate public representatives can never build the modern India of the 21st century," he wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Unacademy co-founder Roman Saini issued a statement and said that Mr Sangwan violated the terms of his contract, which required him to remain impartial in the classroom. As a result, the company was forced to terminate his employment.
"To do this we have in place a strict Code of Conduct for all our educators with the intention of ensuring that our learners have access to unbiased knowledge. Our learners are at the centre of everything we do. The classroom is not a place to share personal opinions and views as they can wrongly influence them. In the current situation, we were forced to part ways with Karan Sangwan as he was in breach of the Code of Conduct," Saini wrote on X.
Internet is abuzz since the news came to the fore with "#UninstallUnacademy" trending on Twitter. Several social media users have questioned as how is it a crime for a teacher to ask his students to elected educated politicians for a better future. The man who lost his job hasn’t issued any statement was yet but Karan has confirmed he will speak out on Saturday on social media platform.
