“No foreign interference in our affairs…”: PM Modi Hits Out at the Opposition Ahead of Budget Session

Ahead of the Budget Session on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the Opposition, commenting on the absence of foreign interference in India’s parliamentary proceedings. He called it a notable change, pointing out that for the first time since 2014, no foreign forces had attempted to disrupt the session. Modi remarked that it had become a recurring trend for some to cause "mischief" before each session, a pattern he has observed since the BJP came to power.
"Since 2014, this is the first Parliament session that saw no foreign interference in our affairs, in which no foreign forces tried to ignite a fire," Modi said, addressing the media in Parliament. He added that it had become a recurring trend for certain elements to cause disruption ahead of every session, particularly after the BJP came to power.
The Prime Minister reflected on the disruptions in past sessions, including those fueled by the “baseless” allegations made by the US-based short-seller Hindenburg. He noted the timing of this remark, coming after Hindenburg’s announcement that it was shutting down.
In his address, Modi emphasized that India is progressing in “mission mode” with a clear focus on key areas. “Innovation, inclusion, and investment – this has consistently been the basis of our economic activity roadmap,” he stated, underscoring the vision for India's future.
The Prime Minister also outlined the goals for the ongoing Budget Session, stressing the importance of India's all-round development. He specifically highlighted women's empowerment as a key area of focus. "We are moving ahead on mission mode," Modi reiterated, as he expressed confidence that this session would see discussions on several historic bills and amendments.
Additionally, Modi emphasized the concepts of "reform, perform, and transform," calling on all Members of Parliament to contribute to strengthening the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India). He also highlighted the significance of this session for young MPs, saying, "It will be a golden opportunity for young MPs. They will be witness to Viksit Bharat."
The Budget Session, which started on January 31, is scheduled to continue in two phases until April 4. The first part will end on February 13, with a recess before the session resumes on March 10. The Union Budget for 2025 will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, making her the first finance minister to present the budget for eight consecutive years. However, the record for the most budget presentations remains with former Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
