"No female MP should be treated this way...": BJP MP Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Threatening Her in Parliament Scuffle
Phangnon Konyak, a BJP MP from Nagaland accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of pushing and threatening her during a heated exchange outside the Parliament on Thursday. In a formal letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, Konyak expressed her deep distress over the incident, claiming that it “severely hurt" her "dignity and self-esteem.”
“While protesting peacefully, I was standing near the Makar Dwar staircase when the Leader of Opposition (LoP) came close to me, making me feel uncomfortable. He started shouting at me, which is unbecoming of an opposition leader. No sitting female member should be treated this way. I seek protection," said the BJP MP from Nagaland.
She described how Gandhi’s approach and shouting were deeply unsettling. “LoP Rahul Gandhi came close. I did not like it, and he started shouting. Whatever happened today is very sad. This should not happen. We did not like the way they threatened. I have also complained to the Chairman,” Konyak stated. She has since requested protection from the Rajya Sabha Chairman and submitted a formal notice in that regard.
The confrontation occurred amid a chaotic scene on Parliament premises, where members from the INDIA alliance and the NDA were protesting over Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned Rahul Gandhi's actions, accusing him of physically charging at the BJP MP and injuring two other Lok Sabha members. “The way opposition MP physically charged a lady member and also injured two other members of the Lok Sabha, that they had to be admitted to the hospital as they were bleeding. I cannot even believe the Congress party's behaviour, it is shameful," said Rijiju.
He further added that such behavior was unacceptable in the Parliament. “The house should never stoop down to such a level that hands are raised on other MPs,” he said. “We have the numbers and we are not scared, but we do not want to disrespect and bring down the level of the House by pushing anyone around. I am asking with my hands folded, that the whole Congress party should seek an apology from the Parliament, ask for an apology from the country too," he added.
BJP leader, J.P. Nadda, also condemned the incident. “Congress exposed itself during the Constitution debate. Rahul Gandhi’s actions, including pushing two of our MPs and causing their hospitalization, are undemocratic and violent. Phangnon Konyak was also pushed, which is both physical and emotional violence. Parliament condemns this act,” he said.
