Mumbai: Boat Capsizes Near Elephanta Caves, 66 Rescued
A ferry boat named Neelkamal, en route to Elephanta Caves, reportedly capsized near Uran, Karanja, at around 3:55pm on Wednesday. So far, 66 people have been rescued. The incident was initially reported by a news channel and later confirmed by the Joint Operations Center (JOC). Rescue and relief operations are being carried out with the assistance of the Marine Police, Coast Guard, and 108 Ambulance services.
“An incident of NILKAMAL a passenger boat capsizing has happened near Elephant caves / Butcher Island at around 3.55pm … another small speed boat dashed to NILKAMAL boat, resulting in the accident. More than 80 people were on boat and 66 people have been rescued. Exact number of casualties not known,” said Pravin Mundhe, DCP Zone 1.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that orders have been given to the district administration to deploy all necessary resources for the rescue efforts. "We have received reports of an accident involving the Neelkamal ferry heading towards Elephanta. Naval, Coast Guard, port, and police teams have been immediately dispatched for rescue operations. We are in constant contact with the district and police administration, and fortunately, the majority of passengers have been rescued. However, rescue operations are still ongoing. Orders have been given to the district administration to deploy all necessary resources for the rescue efforts,” said Fadnavis.
