Maha Vikas Aghadi Announces 5 Guarantees Ahead of Maharashtra Assembly Elections
Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition has unveiled a series of guarantees aimed at addressing key issues impacting the state's people. The guarantees were announced during the coalition's first major public rally at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, attended by top leaders including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The MVA's five key promises are designed to address a range of socio-economic issues, from women's empowerment and farmers' financial aid to unemployment and health care.
1. Mahalakshmi Scheme: Empowering Women
Rahul Gandhi, in his address, emphasized the MVA's commitment to women’s empowerment with the announcement of the Mahalakshmi Scheme. Under this initiative, women in Maharashtra will receive ₹3,000 per month and benefit from free bus travel for women and girls across the state. Gandhi took a sharp dig at the current state government, accusing them of siphoning off ₹90,000 per family annually and handing it over to corporate giants like Ambani and Adani, while offering meager ₹1,500 per month in return.
2. Loan Waivers and Support for Farmers
Sharad Pawar focused on the distress faced by Maharashtra's farmers. The MVA has promised loan waivers of up to ₹3 lakh for farmers, along with an additional incentive of ₹50,000 for those who repay their loans regularly. Pawar also linked the financial challenges of farmers to the larger issue of corruption, citing the collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Rajkot, which he attributed to mismanagement under the BJP-led government.
3. Caste-Based Census and Reservation Reform
A social issue raised by the MVA is the need for a caste-based census, which the coalition has vowed to conduct if it comes to power. The MVA also committed to efforts aimed at removing the 50% cap on caste-based reservations.
4. Health Insurance and Free Medicines
Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President, rounded off the coalition's health guarantee, promising health insurance coverage of up to ₹25 lakh for all citizens. Additionally, the MVA would provide free medicines to the people of Maharashtra. Kharge targeted the Modi government over its unfulfilled promises, including the doubling of farmers' incomes and the creation of 2 crore jobs annually, calling out the disparity between government promises and their delivery.
5. Support for Unemployed Youth
The MVA also announced a financial assistance scheme for unemployed youth, promising up to ₹4,000 per month to help them during their job search. Uddhav Thackeray, in his address, outlined the coalition’s vision of providing economic support and creating job opportunities for the youth, calling it an urgent priority in the face of increasing unemployment rates.
Dharavi Redevelopment Project and the Adani Connection
A significant part of the MVA's criticism was directed at the controversial Dharavi redevelopment project, which is being spearheaded by the Adani Group. Rahul Gandhi accused the state government of handing over ₹1 lakh crore worth of prime land to Adani while relocating the project to other states. He vowed that an MVA-led government would halt the project and focus on prioritizing local development.
Thackeray, echoing Gandhi’s sentiments, pledged to scrap the Dharavi redevelopment project if the MVA comes to power, positioning the issue as one of local interests versus corporate favoritism.
Critique of the BJP Government
Kharge and Gandhi also took aim at the BJP-led state government, criticizing it for catering to big business interests while neglecting the needs of the common people. Kharge invoked the metaphor of the film Udta Punjab to draw a parallel to the alleged mismanagement and corruption plaguing the current administration. He urged voters to reject a government that, in his view, had failed to deliver on its promises. “Modi continues to make false promises while delivering only to Adani and Ambani,” said Kharge, questioning what the BJP-led government had done for Mumbai.
With these five guarantees, the MVA has set the stage for an intense electoral battle in Maharashtra. The promises of financial assistance for women, farmers, youth, and vulnerable communities have been designed to appeal to a wide base of voters. Uddhav Thackeray is expected to further outline the coalition’s vision for the state when he unveils Shiv Sena (UBT)'s manifesto.
