Indian Navy and Sri Lankan Navy Conduct Joint Anti-Narcotics Operation, Seize 500 kg of Crystal Meth
The Indian Navy and Sri Lankan Navy successfully conducted a joint anti-narcotics operation in the Arabian Sea, leading to the seizure of approximately 500 kg of crystal methamphetamine, in a remarkable display of maritime cooperation. The operation, carried out on November 24 and 25, 2024, targeted Sri Lankan-flagged fishing vessels suspected of smuggling narcotics.
The operation was launched after the Sri Lankan Navy provided intelligence on possible smuggling activities. Acting swiftly, the Indian Navy deployed Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft, with additional support from the Information Fusion Centre (Indian Ocean Region) in Gurugram. An Indian Naval ship was also dispatched to enhance the efforts.
Two suspect vessels were identified through continuous surveillance and intelligence-sharing. In a coordinated maneuver involving aerial and maritime assets, the Indian Navy's boarding teams intercepted both boats. The operation resulted in the confiscation of 500 kg of crystal meth.
An additional Indian Navy ship was deployed to bolster the operation, ensuring the swift and effective interception of the vessels. The two boats, along with their crew and the seized narcotics, are being handed over to Sri Lankan authorities for further legal proceedings.
