“Have faith…”: Mamata Banerjee Declares Waqf (Amendment) Act Will Not Be Implemented in Bengal, Vows to Protect Minorities

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced that the Waqf (Amendment) Act would not be implemented in the state. Speaking at a programme for the Jain community in Kolkata, Banerjee reassured that the law would not affect the state and pledged to protect minority communities and their property.
"I know you are aggrieved because of the enactment of the Waqf Act. Have faith, nothing will happen in Bengal that will divide and rule," she said, offering reassurance to those concerned about the legislation.
Banerjee also referred to the situation in Bangladesh, expressing her concerns over the timing of the Bill's passage. "Look at the situation in Bangladesh. This (Waqf Bill) should not have been passed at this time," she said. "We have 33 per cent minorities in Bengal. What should I do with them?" she asked.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader urged the public not to be swayed by those “attempting to stir up political unrest.” "Some people will provoke you to assemble and launch a movement. I will appeal to all of you not to do it. Please remember when Didi is here, she will protect you and your property," she added. She also emphasised the power of unity, calling on people to come together and not be divided. "Let us have trust in each other," she concluded, advocating for solidarity in the face of external provocations.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which has sparked widespread debate, was passed by the Lok Sabha last Thursday and the Rajya Sabha early on Friday after extensive discussions in both Houses of Parliament. The Bill was then given assent by President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday.
