Gurugram Mosque Set Ablaze, Imam Shot Dead Amidst Rising Tensions
Hours after the clashes broke out in Haryana’s Nuh, Anjuman Jama Masjid, a mosque in Sector 57, Gurugram, was set ablaze by a mob.
The mosque was attacked during the early hours of Tuesday. Assailants reportedly shot at least two individuals, one of them being the Imam. Firefighting units were swiftly dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire and hinder its further spread.
“50 to 60 miscreants resorted to open firing and set ablaze Anjuman on Tuesday, it has resulted in the death of one person and severely injured another. Some people have been arrested, and we have registered an FIR against them. An investigation into this unfortunate incident has been launched” said Nitish Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The police have successfully identified a number of the assailants, and conducted multiple raids to apprehend the remaining ones. A handful of the alleged perpetrators are currently in police custody.
Gurugram has been heavily impacted by the violent clashes that broke out in Nuh, Haryana on Monday. Security has been strengthened around religious places. A peace committee has been set up by the authorities to restore law and order. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Nuh and its adjoining areas. In addition, internet services have been suspended in Sohna, Pataudi and Manesar.
Five, including two home guards were killed in Nuh, Haryana, as a result of violent communal clashes on Monday. The violence soon spread to adjoining Gurugram wrecking havoc in the early hours of Tuesday.
