DRI Busts Gold Smuggling Syndicate at Mumbai Airport, Seizes Gold Worth ₹9.6 Crore
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has uncovered a major gold smuggling syndicate operating at Mumbai Airport, seizing gold worth ₹9.6 crore. The gold was hidden inside DJ lights, and two individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. Further investigations are underway.
According to DRI officials, intelligence was received about gold being smuggled into the country through a consignment of DJ lights at Mumbai's Air Cargo Complex. Upon inspecting the shipment, authorities discovered approximately 3 kilograms of gold concealed within each DJ light. In total, 12 kilograms of gold, valued at ₹9.6 crore in the market, was recovered from the consignment.
The investigation later led the DRI to a warehouse, where they uncovered 68 more DJ lights with cavities specifically designed for gold smuggling. Authorities suspect that the syndicate has been smuggling large quantities of gold into the country over an extended period.
The DRI Mumbai unit had seized nearly 48 kilograms of smuggled gold just the week before. The ongoing investigation is focused on this particular case as well as the broader operations of the smuggling syndicate.
