“CPM and the Leftist Students’ Organizations have murdered a student”, says Mamata Banerjee slamming the Left over the student death
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed “CPM and Leftist Students’ Unions” for the death of a 1st year student at Jadavpur University, due to alleged ragging and sexual harassment. While addressing an event organized by the Muslim minorities in Kolkata, she alleged that the terror tale, owing to the death of the 17 year old that has unfolded in this prestigious institution is because of the overt left aligned political climate that prevails over it.
“Jadavpur University is a prestigious institution, and we are still proud of it. But, look at how the CPM and the Leftist Students’ Organizations have murdered a student”, said CM Mamata Banerjee, taking a jibe at CPM and the stream of politics practiced in Jadavpur University. “They (CPM) have not changed. They have the blood of so many people on their hands, in spite of their bloody past; they have not mended their ways. The bloodbath has not stopped”, she added.
Jadavpur University continues to be one of the last strongholds of Leftist student politics. Banerjee had previously slammed the University and called it a ‘land of terror’ controlled by the ‘Marxists’. She further commented on the CCTV debate that has brought the institution into spotlight after the death of the minor on August 10. "These people consider the university to be a place which they own. They don't allow police inside the premises. They don't allow CCTV cameras to be installed in the university campus. They rag students. These people have created an environment of terror in such a prestigious institution like Jadavpur University”, said Banerjee in one of her earlier speeches.
Jadavpur University is under the radar, following the death of the 1st year student due to alleged ragging and harassment. The 17 year old was living at the University Main Boys Hostel when he allegedly fell off the balcony with minimum clothes on his body on August 9. He was immediately rushed to the nearby KPC Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during the wee hours of August 10. The parents allege that their son was ‘murdered’ by the hostel seniors that comprise of both ex- students and current students of the institution. An investigation is underway, and the Kolkata Police so far have arrested a total of 13 people in connection with the death of this student under mysterious conditions
