Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the ruling Trinamool Congress government on Friday for allegedly “protecting” Sheikh Shahjahan, the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali fiasco. The Prime Minister also called the Opposition INDIA alliance for their purported silence on the issue, while addressing a public gathering at West Bengal’s Arambagh on Friday.

“The country has been left aghast by the way the Ma, Mati, Manush (Mother, Land, People) government of Trinamool Congress has treated the sisters of Sandeshkhali. The country is very angry. The soul of Raja Ram Mohan Roy is pained by the way the women of Sandeshkhali are being treated by TMC. When the mothers and the sisters of Sandeshkhali turned to Mamata Banerjee for help, what did she do in return? Didi and her government did everything in their power to shield that TMC leader,” said Prime Minister Modi. He further stated that Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested owing to the continued efforts of the BJP leaders of the state. “These BJP leaders put pressure on the government and continued to fight for the mothers and the sisters and finally the Bengal Police was forced to bow down and arrested the TMC leader yesterday,” he added.

Sharpening his attack on TMC, PM Modi accused that TMC had been protecting the accused for close to two months. "The TMC leader was at large for close to two months under the Trinamool Congress regime. There has to be someone protecting him. Will you ever be able to forgive this? Will you not want to take revenge for the atrocities meted to the women of Sandeshkhali? You must remember that you can avenge each and every wrongdoing with your votes, Har chot ka jawab vote se” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister slammed Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress government for allegedly catering to the vote bank over prioritizing the women of Sandeshkhali. "The people of Bengal want to ask Mamata Banerjee if the votes of some people have become so important that the suffering of the women of Sandeshkhali meant nothing to her?” questioned PM Modi.

Narendra Modi also made it a point to take a dig at the Opposition INDIA Bloc, questioning their alleged silence on the Sandeshkhali issue. “The INDI alliance did not utter a single word condemning the suffering of the women of Sandeshkhali. They kept their ears and eyes shut like Gandhiji’s three monkeys. They hold meetings together in Patna, Bengaluru, Mumbai and other places. However, the Congress and the Left did not have the courage to seek answers from Mamata Banerjee’s government,” asserted Narendra Modi.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Prime Minister inaugurated also laid down the groundwork for projects amounting to Rs 7,200 crore in Bengal’s Hoogly district.
