The Opposition has intensified its demands for a discussion on the deportation of 108 Indian nationals from the United States, with the Congress party formally giving notice for an adjournment motion on the issue. The party has raised concerns over the alleged "inhumane" treatment of the deported individuals by US authorities, seeking a detailed debate on the matter.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, adding to the debate, provided a broader context by highlighting that this deportation was not an isolated incident. He noted that under the Biden administration, over 1,100 Indians had been deported in the previous fiscal year, underscoring the ongoing trend of Indian migrants being detained and sent back. Tharoor pointed out that as of 2022, India had the third-largest population of undocumented immigrants in the US, following Mexico and El Salvador, with nearly 725,000 individuals living without legal status.
The opposition’s call for a debate on the deportation of Indian migrants comes at a time when the Budget Session of Parliament is expected to be rocky, with various contentious issues taking center stage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to respond to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha today, but the session is likely to see fierce debates, particularly on issues raised by the Opposition.
The Opposition has also ramped up its criticism of the government over the tragic stampede during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, which claimed numerous lives. Accusations have been made that the government has concealed the true death toll and withheld vital information regarding the incident. This has fueled further allegations of mismanagement, with calls for accountability from both the state and central governments.
