BJP announces its first list of 195 candidates for Lok Sabha Election 2024

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday released its first list of candidates for the upcoming 2024 General elections, naming 195 candidates out of a total 545 Lok Sabha seats. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again been named as the candidate from his existing constituency, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah too will be contesting from his Gandhinagar seat in Gujarat.

BJP’s first nomination list covers sixteen states and two union territories, the maximum from Uttar Pradesh where 51 seats out of 80 have been announced. The UP list also includes Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from Lucknow and Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani from Amethi.

Two former Chief Ministers who have been fielded include former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb. While Chauhan has been fielded from the Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency, Deb has been fielded from the Tripura West seat. Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindiya has been nominated from his existing Guna seat.

While Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has been nominated from Kota, Hema Maline continues to hold onto the Mathura Seat. Union Minister of Earth Sciences has been nominated from Andra Pradesh West, and Manoj Tiwari has been nominated from North East Delhi.
The first list of candidates released by the Bharatiya Janata Party comprises of 28 female candidates, 27 candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, 18 candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes, 57 from the Other Backward Classes, and 1 Muslim candidate from Kerala.​
