Arvind Kejriwal Agrees to Face the Enforcement Directorate Via Video Conference After Skipping 8 Summons
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday informed that he would appear before the Enforcement Directorate via video conferencing for questioning in connection with the alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy case on a date after March 12, after he skipped 8 summons in connection with the case.
Kejriwal was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on February 27 for the 8th time to appear before it for questioning on March 4th. However, the AAP leader has chosen to skip it due to the Delhi government's budget presentation in the assembly. Instead, Kejriwal informed that although the central agency’s summons was "illegal", he would still appear before the ED for questioning via video conferencing on a date after March 12.
Prior to this, Kejriwal skipped 7 summons. The AAP Chief was first summoned on November 2, 2023, however, he skipped the summon calling it "unsustainable in law" and "motivated". He was then summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on December 28, which Kejriwal skipped for the second time. Arvind Kejriwal then went on to skip the subsequent summons on January 3, January 18, February 2, February 19, and February 26. He was then summoned for the 8th time on February 27 and was asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning on March 4.
The Enforcement Directorate had approached a court in Delhi, and lodged a complaint over Arvind Kejriwal's non-compliance to the summons. Kejriwal had then attended the court proceedings via video conferencing owing to Delhi’s ongoing budget session. Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has asked the Delhi Chief Minister to appear before it in person on March 16.
The ED's ongoing investigation pertains to the alleged irregularities in the drafting and execution of the Delhi excise policy. Two prominent AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia the former deputy CM of Delhi and Sanjay Singh AAP Rajya Sabha MP, who have previously been arrested are currently in judicial custody in connection with the case.
