Two trainee army officers were assaulted, and their friend was gang raped at gunpoint by a group of eight armed men in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Tuesday night. The men, wielding pistols, knives, and sticks, seemingly targeted the group for robbery. The officers and their friends were ambushed while on a nighttime ride.

According to reports, the group of attackers beat up two trainee army officers and their female companions, stealing their valuables. The situation took a turn for the worse when the attackers demanded a ₹10 lakh ransom, taking one officer and a woman hostage. One of the trainee army officer’s was released to go and fetch the ransom, and he in turn alerted the police. The police were quickly alerted, and a team of officers and military personnel rushed to the scene, but the attackers escaped, leaving the victims behind.

A medical examination at Mhow Civil Hospital confirmed that one of the women was raped, and both officers suffered injuries. The police have arrested two suspects, one with a prior criminal record, and are searching for the remaining attackers. A case has been registered under relevant sections, including loot, dacoity, rape, and the Arms Act.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, condemned the attack. “Law and order in BJP ruled states is almost nonexistent - and, the negative attitude of BJP Government towards the day by day increasing crimes against women is extremely worrying…Both the society and the government should be ashamed and think seriously – how long will they turn a blind eye to the responsibility of protecting half the population of the country!” said Gandhi on a post on X.
