“A matter of concern…”: S. Jaishankar Expresses Concerns Over Safety of Minorities in Bangladesh
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday raised concerns about the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, emphasizing that the country’s ruling government must take responsibility for their protection. His remarks came amid reports of rising attacks on Hindus in the neighboring nation.
During the Question Hour in Lok Sabha, Jaishankar acknowledged that the treatment of minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh has become a serious issue. “The treatment of minorities in Bangladesh is a matter of concern,” he stated, highlighting the growing distress within the community.
Bangladesh's interim government recently reported 88 incidents of communal violence against minorities, mainly Hindus, which erupted following the ousting of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August. Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary for interim government head Muhammad Yunus, confirmed that 70 individuals had been arrested in connection with these incidents.
Jaishankar’s comments were made just a day after India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri raised concerns about these attacks during meetings with Bangladeshi officials. Misri conveyed India’s regret over the violence and emphasized the need for ensuring the safety and welfare of minorities in Bangladesh.
In the same address, Jaishankar also touched on India’s relationship with Pakistan, stressing that for relations to improve, Pakistan must demonstrate its commitment to being free of terrorism. He stated, “For India to have good relations with Pakistan, the neighbouring country needs to show they are free of terrorists.”
Further discussing India’s foreign policy, Jaishankar highlighted the success of India’s "Neighbourhood First" initiative. He pointed to the growing trade volumes, development projects, and exchanges with neighboring countries, noting that these efforts contrast with Pakistan and China.
