According to the Bandra Police, the deceased had been living alone for the past few months after her daughter moved in with her husband. The accused, who frequently visited her home, gained her trust and often took money from her. During these visits, he learned that the woman owned jewelry and had money in both her house and bank account.
On February 4, Sharif Ali entered the woman’s apartment under the pretense of a friendly visit. but this time the intention was to steal the money and jewelry which he was keeping eye from many days.
When he entered, he saw the deceased was sitting and welcome him like always. Later in the late night around 11, he took the advantage and grabbed the old women and tied her hands, gagged with a napkin, and proceeded to steal cash and jewelry. Then forced her to transfer money from her bank account, but when she refused, he attacked her with a stone used for grinding spices and stabbed her multiple times in the neck with a kitchen knife, killing her on the spot.
The accused then locked the apartment and left, but instead of fleeing, he continued staying in the building to avoid suspicion.
On February 10, neighbors noticed a foul smell coming from the apartment and alerted the deceased's daughter, who arrived and found her mother brutally murdered. She immediately informed the Bandra Police, who launched an investigation.
During the probe, officers analyzed CCTV footage and found that Sharif Ali was the last person seen entering and exiting the victim’s house. Upon interrogation, he confessed to the murder, revealing that he killed the woman for financial gain.
The police have registered a case under Sections 103(1), 309(4), 311, 333, and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused was produced before the Bandra Court, which granted his custody until February 17.
