"169 Indians, 53 Britishers...": Air India Confirms Nationalities of Passengers On Board, Rescue Efforts Underway

Air India has confirmed the nationalities of the 242 people on board flight AI171, which crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was bound for London Gatwick when it went down within minutes of departure.
Of those on board, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British citizens, seven were from Portugal, and one was a Canadian national.
In an official statement, Air India said, “Air India confirms that flight AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an accident today after take-off. The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 13:38 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals.”
Rescue teams are continuing operations at the crash site in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area. Several injured individuals have already been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency services, including fire brigades and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units, remain actively engaged at the scene.
Air India has also established a dedicated helpline to support families and relatives of those on board. “The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals. We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information,” the airline said. “Air India is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating this incident," added the statement.
The airline added that regular updates would be posted via its official social media channels as more verified information becomes available.
