Rahul Gandhi on Friday took a sharp hit at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his response to questions regarding businessman Gautam Adani during his visit to the United States. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha accused Modi of covering up Adani's alleged corruption and maintaining silence on the issue when asked about it within India. He also attacked the Prime Minister for dismissing the matter as a “personal issue” when questioned abroad.
“If you ask questions in the country, there is silence. If you ask abroad, it is a personal matter! Even in America, Modi Ji covered up Adani Ji’s corruption!” posted Gandhi on social media platform “X”. “When filling a friend’s pocket is 'nation building' for Modiji, then taking bribes and looting the nation’s wealth becomes a 'personal matter',” he added.
Gandhi’s remarks came after PM Modi was asked during a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump whether the issue of Adani’s alleged bribery and fraud had been discussed during their meeting. The question referenced charges by US prosecutors, who accused Adani of arranging bribes totaling over $250 million to Indian officials in exchange for favorable business deals, while also allegedly defrauding US investors.
In his response, PM Modi stated that such individual matters would not be discussed between the leaders of two countries. “Every Indian is my own family member. And when it comes to such personal matters, two leaders of two countries will not get together on that topic and discuss anything on an individual matter,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Adani Group, which is led by Asia’s second-richest man, has denied the allegations. Despite this, the controversy has sparked a heated political debate in India, with Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party continuing to demand accountability over the issue.
