Wayanad Landslide: Death Toll Hits 148, Rescue Efforts Intensify
At least 148 people have lost their lives, and more than 180 have sustained injuries following multiple landslides in the hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad. The disaster struck amid heavy rains, triggering three landslides within a span of four hours on Tuesday. Multiple villages including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha have been severely affected, with reports of people being swept away in the Chaliyar River.
Rescue efforts are underway as over 100 people are feared to be trapped under debris. Authorities, including units from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and other emergency services, are racing against time to locate survivors amidst the collapsed structures and debris. The Army has deployed 225 personnel, and additional reinforcements have been mobilized to support the rescue operations in Wayanad.
In response to the crisis, 45 relief camps have been set up across the district, accommodating 3,069 displaced individuals. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared a two-day state mourning and is personally overseeing the rescue efforts. The situation remains precarious with continued heavy rainfall posing threats of further landslides, prompting the issuance of red alerts in multiple districts.
Meanwhile, the weather department has forecasted more rain in Wayanad and adjoining areas over the next few days. The Prime Minister's Office has announced compensation for the families of the deceased, and neighboring Tamil Nadu has pledged financial assistance to support Kerala in its relief efforts.
Amidst the ongoing rescue operations, former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had planned to visit the affected areas but had to cancel due to adverse weather conditions. They expressed solidarity with the affected population and pledged support from their respective parties, and assured that they would visit as soon as the weather conditions are conducive.
