'Votes at Risk...’: Aaditya Thackeray Slams Govt Over Alleged Voter List Discrepancies

A delegation led by UBT Shiv Sena leader and MLA Aaditya Thackeray, along with MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar, visited the State Election Commission to submit a detailed memorandum flagging major issues in the voter rolls and citizenship records.

Speaking to the media afterward, Aaditya accused the current government of carrying out deliberate, politically driven changes to the electoral rolls. According to him, voter lists in areas governed by the ruling alliance were left mostly untouched, while opposition-heavy wards saw sudden and suspicious modifications.

Aaditya further alleged that voters from areas where the UBT faction traditionally performs well. Bhandup, Worli, Sewri, Colaba, Kanjurmarg, Goregaon, Jogeshwari, and Dadar, were intentionally shifted, calling it part of a wider political plan to weaken the opposition’s support ahead of the civic polls.

He also questioned the timing of the draft list’s release. It was first expected on November 7, then pushed to November 14, and finally published on November 20. Aaditya called the delay intentional, suggesting it was meant to influence the upcoming elections.

During the meeting, he raised several serious concerns. At one address, 38 voters were registered, and similar cases were reportedly found at more than 26,000 locations across Maharashtra amounting to over eight lakh votes that could skew the outcome. He added that over six lakh entries lacked proper house numbers, making verification nearly impossible. A rise in duplicate names, he warned, posed a direct threat to the principle of “one person, one vote.”

He demanded that citizens be given a full 21 days to raise objections and submit suggestions on the draft list, saying the inconsistencies were too serious to ignore.

He also criticised the government for repeatedly saying municipal election dates would be announced “soon,” without providing any clarity, which he described as an attempt to create uncertainty and gain an advantage.

The opposition delegation urged the State Election Commission to thoroughly audit the voter rolls, correct all errors, and ensure a fair, transparent, and impartial election process.
