Two Pune Residents Blackmailed Through Loan Apps, Suicide Attempts Averted by Maharashtra Cyber Department
In two alarming incidents, residents of Pune district fell prey to cyber blackmail and harassment after borrowing small sums through loan applications. The Maharashtra Cyber Department's swift intervention not only addressed the cases but also prevented the victims from taking extreme steps.
In the first case, a 22-year-old man borrowed ₹2,800 via a loan app and repaid the amount. However, he was harassed with repeated demands for additional payments. When he refused, the app operators escalated the harassment by sending explicit, morphed nude photographs of a female relative to his family members via WhatsApp. Due to unbearable harassment, the victim contacted the Maharashtra Cyber Helpline at 14407, expressing suicidal thoughts. A cyber analyst immediately alerted the local police station, leading to timely action that prevented a tragedy.
In another incident, a 35-year-old man borrowed ₹5,060 for a medical emergency, agreeing to an EMI of ₹1,700. However, the loan app doubled the repayment amount without explanation. When the victim refused to comply, he and his family members were threatened with the circulation of explicit photographs. Feeling distressed, the victim also called the Maharashtra Cyber helpline, revealing suicidal intentions. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the cyber analyst flagged it as a "severe blackmailing" case. Authorities promptly intervened, ensuring the victim's safety and mental well-being.
The Maharashtra Cyber Department has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens against cyber harassment. It urges anyone facing similar issues to report them immediately by contacting the 24x7 helpline at 14407.
