Two killed in fresh violence in Manipur, days ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024
In fresh violence, Two people were killed after clashes broke out between armed groups In Manipur’s East Imphal district, close to Kangpokpi. Two dismembered bodies have been recovered and the victims are yet to be identified. Police have not issued any statement as yet, as to what triggered the violence. The area where the clashes erupted, police sources claim is in the foothills of Kangpokpi. This comes days before Manipur goes to polling for Lok Sabha election in the first phase of polling.
Trouble had been brewing in the state after a brief lull period, following the gunfight in Tengnoupal district on Friday between unidentified armed village volunteers and gunmen in which three persons were injured. Manipur’s Moreh has witnessed large-scale violence in December 2023 and January 2024.
Violence first broke out in Churachandpur on May 03, 2023 and in what followed next had left more than 200 people dead, over 60,000 displaced and a state divided between two communities- the Meiteis and the Kukis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday during an interview with a newspaper daily from Assam had claimed that the “timely intervention” by the central government and the state government had helped the situation in Manipur improve.
