Tripura Government Takes Action: Three Police Officers Suspended, Senior Officer Removed Following Security Breach at Bangladesh Diplomatic Mission in Agartala
The Tripura government on Tuesday suspended three police officers, withdrew a senior officer from his post, and detained seven individuals following a security breach at the Bangladesh diplomatic mission in Agartala.
Following the breach, Tripura's police officials confirmed that an inquiry had been ordered into the matter. As part of the disciplinary action, three sub-inspectors—Dilu Jamatia, Debabrata Sinha, and Joynal Hossain—were suspended, and Assistant Commandant Kanti Nath Ghosh was removed from his position.
The incident stemmed from a protest by around 50 people against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. The protesters entered the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, raising serious security concerns. This intrusion prompted a strong response from Bangladesh's interim government, which blamed local police for failing to manage the situation. Dhaka stated that the incident left the mission staff feeling unsafe and called on New Delhi to take immediate action.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha condemned the actions of the protesters, stating that while peaceful demonstrations are permissible, such acts of aggression are "absolutely unacceptable."
In a statement, India's Ministry of External Affairs described the incident as "deeply regrettable." The Ministry emphasized that "diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances" and assured that the government was enhancing security measures for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi as well as its consular missions across India. In the aftermath of the incident, additional police forces were deployed to secure the Bangladesh mission in Agartala.
