Terror Strikes in Balochistan: BLA Seizes Train, Holds 214 Hostages; Pakistan Forces Battle to Rescue Survivors

Militants from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) hijacked the Jaffar Express train in Balochistan, Pakistan, on March 11, in an act of terrorism that resulted in multiple casualties and a tense hostage situation.
The attack began when insurgents detonated explosives on the train tracks, forcing the train to stop as it neared a tunnel in the province's rugged terrain. Armed militants then opened fire on passengers, causing panic and injuries. Despite attempts by security personnel on board to retaliate, the attackers managed to seize control of the train.
The BLA later claimed responsibility for the assault, stating they had taken 214 hostages, including military personnel. They demanded the release of Baloch political prisoners within 48 hours, threatening to execute the hostages and destroy the train if their demands were not met.
Pakistani security forces responded by launching a rescue operation, successfully freeing over 150 hostages and killing 27 militants. However, the situation remains dire, as militants have reportedly stationed suicide bombers among the remaining hostages, complicating further efforts to resolve the crisis.
Balochistan's Home Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, condemned the attack, calling for decisive action against those targeting innocent civilians. The Pakistani government has pledged to take strong measures to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of its citizens.
This attack is part of an ongoing series of violent events in Balochistan, raising concerns about the region’s persistent insurgency. The BLA has been involved in several major attacks, including a suicide bombing at Quetta railway station in November 2024 that resulted in 32 deaths and 55 injuries.
