Shutdown Enforced Across Kuki-Zo Regions in Manipur Following Overnight Clashes in Churachandpur

A complete shutdown has been enforced across Kuki-Zo-dominated areas of Manipur after violent clashes erupted between youth protesters and security forces in Churachandpur district late last night.

The shutdown comes amid escalating tensions, as Kuki-Zo tribal organisations announced a social boycott of community legislators who joined the newly constituted Manipur government led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. The boycott has been framed by protest leaders as a response to what they describe as a “betrayal” by the elected representatives.

The dawn-to-dusk shutdown across hill districts inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community was implemented hours before the seventh session of the 12th Manipur Assembly commenced, marked by an address from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

According to official sources, at least two individuals sustained injuries during the unrest, while five others were detained by authorities. Security forces reportedly resorted to repeated tear gas shelling through the night in an attempt to disperse crowds and regain control of the situation.

The confrontation began near the Tuibong Forest gate area, where groups of protesters allegedly pelted stones at security personnel, prompting an initial tactical retreat by the forces. Security units later repositioned themselves along a nearby roadway.

Protesters subsequently regrouped and launched a fresh round of attacks on security forces, with intermittent clashes continuing until approximately 3 a.m., sources confirmed.

Authorities remain on high alert as tensions persist across the region, with security deployments intensified to prevent further escalation.
