“Shaant raho, tumhare ghar ED na aa jaaye”, BJP Leader Meenakshi Lekhi warns the Opposition
During a debate on the Delhi Ordinance Bill in the Parliament on Thursday, Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi warned the Opposition, asking them to keep quite or else, the ED (Enforecement Directorate) may arrive at their homes. A statement that has garnered the ire of several leaders of the opposition, who have in the past alleged that the ruling government uses central agencies to curb dissent in Opposition ruled states.
On Thursday, Lekhi was interrupted by an Opposition leader while she was speaking in the House, in response, she said, “Ek minute, ek minute. Shaant raho, tumhare ghar ED na aa jaaye," (One minute, one minute. Please keep quite or else the ED will arrive at your house). Several leaders of the opposition have called out Meenakshi Lekhi for her arrogance, and the union government for their misuse of power.
In the past, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on several occasions has stated that the BJP government has sent the central agencies to hinder Bengal’s activities. “BJP hhas gone to the extent of harassing the Opposition by the ED and income tax raids”, said Banerjee, only cementing Lekhi’s claim.
Taking to Twitter, Youth Congress President, Srinivas BV questioned if Lekhi’s statement was a ‘warning’ or a ‘threat’ to the Opposition parties. He said, “Yeh chetavni hai, ya dhamki?” (Is it a warning or a threat?)
“Today, shockingly, Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi threatened the Opposition in Parliament & said: “Keep quiet or ED may arrive at your home” BJP Ministers now openly threaten to use ED against Opposition just for speaking in Parliament. The vendetta isn’t even hidden anymore.” Tweeted Saket Gokhale, Member of the Rajya Sabha, and National Spokesperson, TMC.
Clyde Crasto, Nationalist Congress Party Spokesperson said that Lekhi’s insinuating threat simply proves that the central government misuses the power vested in them. “This insinuating threat given by @M_Lekhi in the heat of the moment in #LokSabha proves what many have been saying, "Misuse of central agencies.”he tweeted.
