The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court in Kolkata, on Monday has framed the charges against the prime accused Sanjay Roy in connection with the horrific rape and murder of the RG Kar medical student. The charges were framed under sections 64 (punishment for rape), 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state) and 103 (punishment for murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita, 87 days after the shocking incident. The 31 year old PGT doctor at the state government run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was brutalised, violated and murdered on August 9, earlier this year. Accused Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by Kolkata Police in less than 12 hours since the crime, on August 10. But later as Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI on August 13, Roy’s custody was handed over to the central agency.

CBI has already filed its first chargesheet in connection with the case on October 7, identifying Sanjay Roy as the person who has “committed the crime of rape and murder of the victim”. CBI’s assessment relied on evidences against Sanjay including the reports confirming the semen and saliva on the victim’s body belonged to him. That apart the DNA report, injuries on the body of Sanjay have all confirmed his involvement with the crime, according to the CBI chargesheet.

“The court has framed the charges. The trial will start on November 11. There will be day-to-day hearing,” Soutik Banerjee, advocate of the victim’s father, told media persons.

The body of the female doctor was recovered from the seminar room of the third floor of the emergency building at the State run RG Kar MCH. The incident had stoked nationwide protests demanding better security for the doctors at the hospital. Supreme Court had also intervened and since August 20, had heard the matter for five times. The sixth hearing is slated for Tuesday before the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud in the Supreme Court.
