Rahul Gandhi’s “Memory Loss” Comment on Biden Sparks Controversy, Doctors Call for an Apology
A group of medical professionals has called for a public apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following his alleged remarks about the cognitive abilities of US President Joe Biden, describing them as insensitive. The medical practitioners expressed concern that Gandhi's comments reflect a lack of understanding and sensitivity toward issues related to cognitive health.
In a letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi’s mother and former Congress president, C B Tripathi, the All India President of the National Medicos Organisation Bharat (NMO-Bharat), expressed concern over the remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Maharashtra's Amravati on November 16. At the rally, Gandhi suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared to be suffering from "memory loss" like "the former President" of the United States, which was widely interpreted as a reference to President Biden.
Tripathi criticized the statement, stating that it "perpetuates harmful stereotypes about ageing and cognitive health." He emphasized that such remarks could spread misinformation and influence public perceptions in ways that negatively affect the treatment and understanding of people with cognitive challenges.
In his letter, Tripathi expressed disappointment, saying, "It is disappointing to see Rahul Gandhi comment so crudely about a foreign head of state who is much senior and older than him." He went on to explain that such remarks are contrary to India’s cultural values of respecting elders. "This flies right in the face of our Indian ethos of respecting our elders. Such remarks are unbecoming of a leader of opposition and suggest a lack of understanding and sensitivity."
Furthermore, Tripathi highlighted that Gandhi’s comments veer into ageist territory, further stigmatizing individuals with cognitive health issues. "This is not just disrespectful to the individuals targeted but also to countless senior citizens in India who contribute meaningfully to society despite health challenges," he added.
The letter also referenced Sonia Gandhi’s personal experience with health-related rumors and misinformation, urging her to understand the damaging impact of such narratives. "Mrs. Gandhi, you have personally been a victim of such health-related rumours, misinformation, and allegations. You would know how damaging such narratives can be, not only for the individuals targeted but also for the broader discourse in society,” said the letter.
Tripathi concluded the letter by urging Rahul Gandhi to reflect on his comments and offer a public apology. "On behalf of the medical community, we urge Mr Gandhi to reflect on his remarks, issue a public apology, and refrain from making such insensitive comments in the future. Political dialogue should uplift and unite, not stigmatize or mock," he said.
