“It is heartbreaking…”: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Calls for Justice in Kolkata Doctor's Rape and Murder Case

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday urged the West Bengal government to take decisive action following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The senior Congress leader described the incident as "heartbreaking" and stressed on the urgent need for justice.

“The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College is heartbreaking. Safety of women at workplace is a big issue in the country and concrete efforts are needed for this. I appeal to the state government to take immediate and strict action in this case and ensure justice to the victim's family and fellow doctors,” posted Priyanka Gandhi on her X handle.

The brutal rape and murder of a PGT doctor on the campus of Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital during the wee hours of Friday morning has sparked nationwide outrage and prompted widespread protests, with doctors across India highlighting their working conditions and demanding justice for the victim.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged stringent action. She visited the victim's family and set a deadline for Kolkata Police to complete their investigation, failing which, the case will be handed over to the CBI. “Police, Dog Squad, Forensic department and other teams are on the job. Investigation has been started to arrest the accused and police are trying to arrest him as early as possible. If the Police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, then we will not keep this case in our hands we will hand it over to CBI,” said Banerjee.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer in the welfare organisation has been arrested by the Kolkata Police on Saturday as the main accused in the rape and murder of the PGT trainee doctor. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal assured, “We are sure that if more people are involved, we will be able to arrest them in the next four to five days.”

On Friday morning, the PGT doctor was found dead in a semi-nude position in the seminar hall at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, where she had gone to rest after sharing a meal with colleagues. The initial post-mortem report revealed a gruesome picture of severe injuries, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, as well as a broken neck, indicating a brutal and fatal attack.
