CBI Rules out Gang-Rape in Kolkata RG Kar Doctor Case, Identifies Sanjay Roy as Sole Suspect

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded that there was no gang rape involved in the horrific case of a trainee doctor’s rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, reported NDTV. The CBI has identified Sanjay Roy as the sole suspect in the case, with the investigation now nearing its final stages, according to NDTV. The CBI’s findings indicate that the available evidence only implicates Roy, who has been arrested. The agency is preparing to file charges soon, as it moves to conclude its probe.

The case, transferred to the CBI by the Kolkata High Court, had previously been under scrutiny from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who criticized the slow progress of the investigation. The CBI has faced pressure from both the Chief Minister and the public, with criticism over its pace compared to the Kolkata Police’s earlier updates. State Minister Bratya Basu also highlighted the lack of progress reports from the CBI.

According to the media report, the central agency has conducted over 100 witness interviews and 10 polygraph tests as part of its investigation. Additionally, a medical report with the accused's DNA has been sent to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi for further analysis. As per reports, the CBI is expected to file a status report with the Calcutta High Court on September 17, providing an update on the investigation's progress.

In parallel, the CBI has been investigating financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, leading to the arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal, along with three others. Dr. Ghosh faces charges related to alleged financial misconduct, including the illegal sale of unclaimed corpses and trafficking in biomedical waste. He was suspended from his position and arrested following a petition by former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali.

The rape and murder case has sparked widespread outrage and protests from medical professionals, civil society activists, and political figures. There have been various claims and allegations, including accusations of police attempts to bribe the victim’s family, which have been denied by the authorities. The victim’s family has also claimed they were coerced into cremating the body under police pressure, though the state has dismissed these allegations as rumors.​
