Canopy outside Rajkot Airport collapses a day after Delhi Airport roof collapsed amidst heavy rainfall

A portion of the soft roof canopy outside the Rajkot airport collapsed amidst heavy rainfall on Saturday. According to reports, no fatalities or injuries were reported in this incident. This comes a day after a section of the roof of the T1 terminal of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed claiming one life and injuring several others.

Heavy rains in Gujarat led to the canopy collapse at Rajkot airport's passenger pickup and drop area. The southwest monsoon's advance into the state prompted the deployment of seven National Disaster Response Force teams in various districts. This is the third incident of rain inflicted damages to airports, following those of the Jabalpur airport on Thursday, and the Delhi airport roof collapse on Friday.

In a separate incident at Jabalpur airport in Madhya Pradesh, a fabric canopy collapsed on Thursday, owing to the heavy downpour. However, the incident did not result in any injuries but crushed a parked car below. These incidents have raised concerns about infrastructure safety during the monsoon season, prompting heightened vigilance across affected regions.

The incident in Delhi prompted immediate action from authorities, with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announcing compensation for the deceased and injured. Following the roof collapse at Terminal-1, flight operations were temporarily halted as a precautionary measure.
