Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Launches Scathing Attack on BJP in Maiden Lok Sabha Speech
In her maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a sharp criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reaffirming her commitment to defending India’s Constitution and questioning the government's handling of national issues. She firmly stated that the Constitution does not reflect the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and emphasized that India has never remained under the control of “cowards” for long.
The Wayanad MP began by addressing the BJP's attempts to undermine the Constitution, declaring, "The Constitution cannot be altered. The BJP learned this the hard way in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections." She also reaffirmed her stance on the inviolability of the Constitution, calling it a beacon of justice and hope for the common people. "It empowers citizens to fight for justice and gives them the power to hold the government accountable," she added.
Continuing her attack, Priyanka reiterated her party’s allegations of a close relationship between the Modi government and the Adani Group. "India believes the Union government exists solely for Adani," she asserted. She pointed to incidents like the allocation of cold storage facilities in Himachal Pradesh to Adani as evidence of this alleged collusion.
As the newest member of the Gandhi family in Parliament, Priyanka took the opportunity to defend her family’s legacy. Responding to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks on her brother Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Mohabbat ka Dukan’ yatra, Priyanka criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for avoiding direct engagement with the public. "The Prime Minister was seen for only ten minutes during the debate while critical issues remained unaddressed," she said, citing the ongoing violence in Sambhal and Manipur as examples of the government's failure to act.
Priyanka listed a series of incidents, including communal violence in Sambhal, the rape of a woman in Unnao, the lynching of a man in Agra, and ethnic violence in Manipur, to argue that the government has failed to protect the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. "These incidents show the government’s failure to uphold the Constitution's guarantees," she stated, while also emphasizing the role of the Constitution in empowering victims to seek justice.
In addition, Priyanka Gandhi called for the implementation of a caste census, stressing the importance of understanding the needs of marginalized communities. She also criticized the government for focusing on policies that benefit industrialists rather than addressing the needs of farmers. "The government is more concerned with serving one individual and one company, while the needs of the people are neglected," she said.
She also accused the BJP of using money to overthrow elected governments in states like Maharashtra and Goa, accusing the party of undermining democracy. "Despite mockery of Rahul Gandhi’s yatra, millions supported the 'Mohabbat ka Dukan' campaign," Priyanka remarked, defending her brother’s outreach to the public.
