Parliament Adjourned Amid BJP-Opposition Standoff Over Sonia Gandhi-Soros Allegations
Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned on Tuesday following a standoff between the ruling BJP and opposition MPs. The confrontation was sparked by allegations linking Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to businessman George Soros. The disruptions led to the suspension of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for the day.
"Ours is the largest democracy in the world, and it fulfills the hopes and aspirations of over a billion people. We have to maintain that dignity... but I have seen things happening that are not good," said Speaker Om Birla expressing his dismay at the disorder, urging MPs to uphold the dignity of the House. Birla emphasized that disagreements are part of a healthy democracy but insisted that both sides must resolve their differences respectfully. "Everyone should maintain dignity and work in such a way that a positive message goes out of this 'temple of democracy'," he added.
The reprimand came after opposition MPs, who were demanding a discussion on various issues, including the allegations involving Sonia Gandhi and Soros, refused to allow Question Hour to begin. Birla repeatedly asked the opposition to allow the House to function smoothly, especially as they raised the Soros issue.
Following the adjournment, BJP MP Sambit Patra criticized the opposition, particularly Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who heads the party in the Lok Sabha. "Rahul Gandhi ji doesn’t know how to behave like an LoP," Patra said, adding, "It is unfortunate they are not letting Parliament function." Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of undermining parliamentary democracy. "The Congress in Rajya Sabha is looking for debate and discussion, but it is only Rahul Gandhi who doesn’t want it... Probably he doesn’t believe in parliamentary democracy," he stated.
The Congress quickly responded, senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit out at the BJP accusing the party of causing disruptions that ultimately lead to the adjournment of the house. "We try, every day, to have a discussion, but they don’t want to have a discussion... that is why they get the House adjourned for any reason," said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
In addition, the INDIA bloc filed a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, accusing him of bias. The motion, with over 50 signatures from MPs across several opposition parties, was submitted to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
The motion followed a chaotic session on Monday, where BJP MPs targeted Sonia and Rahul Gandhi over alleged links to George Soros. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly rejected the accusations. Kharge criticized Dhankhar for allowing BJP members to attack Sonia Gandhi while rejecting multiple notices for a discussion. "What Nadda said is a lie. It’s wrong to damage the image of a member who is not present,” he said.
