The agreement was announced separately by officials from both nations, with each claiming the initiative originated from the other. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry stated that the ceasefire was granted at Afghanistan's request, emphasising a commitment to dialogue for resolving underlying issues. Conversely, Afghan Taliban spokespersons asserted that Pakistan sought the pause in hostilities, instructing their forces to uphold the truce but warning of retaliation if breached.
Tensions flared up near key border crossings such as Torkham and Spin Boldak, where cross-border fire exchanges and reported Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghan territory intensified over the past week. The violence began with accusations from Pakistan that Afghan soil was being used as a safe heaven for militants from the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group Islamabad blames for attacks within its borders. Afghanistan has repeatedly denied these claims, instead condemning Pakistani military actions as violations of its sovereignty.
Casualty figures remain disputed. Pakistani sources reported repelling assaults and inflicting heavy losses on Afghan forces, including around 20 Taliban fighters killed in one engagement near Spin Boldak. Afghan officials, meanwhile, claimed over a dozen civilians were killed and more than 100 injured in Pakistani strikes. Explosions in Kabul on the evening of October 15 were attributed by Taliban authorities to an oil tanker and generator mishap, unrelated to the border conflict.
