Mithun Chakraborty to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award; the Actor expresses gratitude
Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty will be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, announced Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday. The veteran national award winning actor has welcomed the announcement, said he was “humbled”.
In a post on X, Vaishnaw confirmed that the award will be presented to Mithun Chakraborty during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8. He hailed the award as an ideal honour for the remarkable cinematic journey of Mithun Chakraborty that had “inspired generations”
"Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. To be presented at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on Oct 8, 2024,” he wrote on X.
With his debut film in Bollywood in 1977, Mithun Chakraborty had won the first National Award for M’rinal Sen’s ‘Mrigayaa’, a feat achieved by very few in the film industry. Chakraborty has won there National awards, four Filmfare awards in his career. He is also the recipient of the Padma Bhusan in the year 2024, the third-highest civilian honour, by the Government of India. Once a Rajya Sabha Member of TMC, Mithun Chakraborty is now the star campaigner of BJP in Bengal. “I have never asked for anything from my party. Everything is destined to happen at its right time. I was supposed to receive the award now, and it has happened. I am grateful to the people of our country for the love and support”, said Mithun Chakraborty in Kolkata, his Bengali film ‘Sashtri’ is due for release during the festive season.
He became an icon, a cult after his Superhit movie ‘Disco Dancer’, He was also praised for the 1990 movie, Agneepath alongside Amitabh Bachhan.
