A massive explosion was reported near the historic Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening. Several people were reportedly injured after a car exploded near Gate Number 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station. The cause of the blast has not yet been confirmed.
According to the latest reports, seven fire tenders were dispatched to the spot after authorities received a call at around 7:05 p.m. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from burning vehicles outside the metro station, as chaos unfolded on the busy streets of Old Delhi.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion triggered a fire that quickly spread to nearby vehicles. Visuals from the scene showed a car engulfed in flames, with several others severely damaged or mangled. The impact of the blast was so intense that even vehicles parked a few metres away had shattered windscreens.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) confirmed that “a call was received regarding an explosion in a car near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, after which three to four vehicles also caught fire and sustained damage.”
The area, one of the most crowded parts of the national capital, was immediately cordoned off by police. Personnel from the Delhi Police’s Special Cell also arrived at the scene, and a high alert was issued across the city. Traffic movement around Purani Dilli and nearby areas has been diverted as a precautionary measure.
Emergency responders said efforts were underway to control the fire and assess the extent of damage. “Several people have been injured, though the exact number of casualties is being verified,” a senior police officer said.
The explosion comes on a day when security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir, along with police in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, busted a major terror module linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind networks. Eight people, including three doctors, were arrested in connection with the operation in Faridabad.
Authorities have not yet established any connection between the two incidents, but security across Delhi has been stepped up in the wake of the Red Fort blast. Investigations are ongoing to determine the nature and source of the explosion.
