Manmohan Singh Laid to Rest with Full State Honours at Nigambodh Ghat
Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was laid to rest with full state honours on Saturday at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat. His funeral was attended by a host of political leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi among others.
The day began with a procession to the All India Congress Committee headquarters, where Congress leaders paid their tributes to the departed leader. The mortal remains of Manmohan Singh were taken in a flower-decked vehicle from his residence at 3, Motilal Nehru Road, to the AICC office. As the procession passed through the streets of the national capital, chants of “Manmohan Singh Amar Rahe” echoed in the air.
At the AICC headquarters, Singh’s body was kept for about an hour, allowing Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, to offer their final respects. His wife, Gursharan Kaur, along with one of his daughters, also laid wreaths on the body before the procession moved towards the crematorium.
Singh’s daughter lit his funeral pyre at the Nigambodh Ghat, with dignitaries such as President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Congress leaders present. Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay also attended the ceremony to pay his respects to the former Indian leader.
Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92, due to age-related health complications at the Delhi AIIMS. He served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, playing a pivotal role in steering the country’s economic policies during his tenure. In recognition of his contributions, a seven-day national mourning has been declared across India. During this period, the national flag will fly at half-mast in all public buildings as a tribute to Singh.
