Manipur Violence: Anti BJP slogans raised in Massive Protest Rally in Mizoram, CM and other parties join
Thousands of people participated in a demonstration rally in the capital city of Aizawl, Mizoram, on Tuesday as a mark of protest against human rights violations in strife torn Manipur. The protest was called by NGO Co-ordination committee comprising of five major organisations, in solidarity with with the Kuki-Zo community people in Manipur. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga along with MLAs cutting across parties had joined the rally where people carried posters, placards condemning the violence in their neighboring state. Chief Minister himself had urged for public participation. BJP too, along with Congress and ZPM had participated in the rally where protesters had raised slogans against Prime Minister Modi, questioning his silence over Manipur crisis.
This comes days after the viral video of two Kuki women being violated shook the conscience of the nation, thereafter bringing to fore more such stories of abuse and suffering from the trouble torn state of Manipur. Mizoram historically shares a deep rooted ethnic bond with the Kuki-Zo community people of Manipur. Recently there has been mass exodus of Meitei community people from Mizoram after a statement from Peace Accord MNF Returnees’ Association (PAMRA) warned that Meitei people staying in Mizoram will be responsible for their own safety, prompting Mizoram police and administration to deploy additional forces at several parts of the state to avoid anything untoward.
Tuesday’s rally saw massive support from people from all walks of life, one of the biggest rallies in the recent history to have happened in Mizoram. The offices of the ruling MNF were closed to extend support to the demonstration. The opposition BJP, Congress and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) also kept their offices shut on Tuesday.
Security was beefed up across Mizoram in view of Tuesday’s protest rallies, rallies were also taken out in other districts of the state. Additional deployments were made in vulnerable areas, in order to avoid any law and order situation.
