Maharashtra to Review Ladki Bahin Scheme; Over 20 Lakh Beneficiaries Likely to be Dropped
The Maharashtra government is set to review the list of 2.63 crore beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, aiming to exclude individuals already availing benefits from other welfare schemes, according to a report by The New Indian Express.
The decision comes just a month after the Mahayuti alliance achieved a sweeping electoral mandate in the state. Analysts credit the scheme as a significant factor in the alliance’s victory.
Launched in August 2024 by the previous Eknath Shinde-led government, the Ladki Bahin scheme provides a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to eligible women. During the election campaign, Shinde had pledged to increase this amount to Rs 2,100 if re-elected.
Overlapping Benefits Under Scrutiny
The Women and Child Development and Welfare Department estimates that over 20 lakh beneficiaries may be removed from the scheme due to overlapping benefits with other programs.
“These beneficiaries are also listed under the Namo Shetkari and other direct benefit schemes. We have decided to drop them to ensure the benefits reach those who truly deserve it,” said Aditi Tatkare, Minister of Women and Child Development.
Tatkare further clarified, “If a woman receives less under another scheme compared to Ladki Bahin, we will provide a matching amount. If the amount is more, the beneficiaries will be excluded from this scheme. This exercise is necessary to tighten the rules and ensure only genuine beneficiaries are covered.”
Income Ceiling and Misuse Allegations
Beneficiaries with a combined annual family income exceeding Rs 2.50 lakh will also be removed from the list. A senior official explained that the scrutiny is aimed at plugging loopholes and preventing misuse of taxpayer money. “We observed that many applicants were exploiting the scheme’s provisions. This review is necessary to uphold its original purpose of supporting women in genuine need,” the official added.
The move has drawn criticism from the Opposition. Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole accused the Mahayuti government of using the scheme for political gains.
“The scheme was launched hurriedly for electoral benefits. Former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had assured that it would benefit all needy and poor women without scrutiny. This review contradicts those promises,” Patole said.
