Maharashtra RTO Initiates License Cancellation Process for Driver Involved in Kurla BEST Bus Accident
The Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department has initiated proceedings to cancel the driving license of Sanjay More, the driver involved in the December 9 BEST bus accident in Kurla. The Wadala Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued a show-cause notice to More, as part of the process to revoke his driving privileges.
Sub-Regional Transport Officer Pallavi Kothawade confirmed that the action began earlier this week. "A notice was issued to More on Monday. Further action under the Motor Vehicles Act will be based on his response," Kothawade stated.
The Mumbai Police had formally requested the Wadala RTO to cancel More’s license, citing the severity of the accident.
Driver’s 23-Year Record Under Review
If the license is revoked, More will be prohibited from driving any vehicle. More, who has held a driving license for 23 years, was employed by a third-party agency that supplies drivers to Evey Trans, a subsidiary of electric bus manufacturer Olectra. For the past four years, he had been driving mini-buses for BEST’s wet lease operators. More was recently assigned to drive 12-meter electric buses under the new company arrangement.
According to RTO records, More's transport license, initially issued for light motor vehicles such as tempos and taxis, was granted on July 5, 1990. He obtained a heavy vehicle license on August 8, 1991, which allowed him to operate buses and trucks.
In addition to his driving license, More holds a driver’s badge, a mandatory certification for operating public service vehicles like buses in the BEST and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) fleets. This badge was issued by the RTO on December 18, 1999.
Authorities will take further steps based on More’s response to the show-cause notice, with the possibility of the cancellation proceeding under the Motor Vehicles Act depending on his explanation.
