Maha Kumbh: 13 FIRs Filed Against 140 Social Media Handles for Spreading ‘Misleading Content’

At least 13 FIRs have been filed against 140 social media accounts for spreading ‘false’ and ‘misleading content’ regarding the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The FIRs were registered after the Uttar Pradesh Police's social media monitoring cell identified posts that misrepresented events at the religious gathering.
“Misinformation regarding the Kumbh has been circulating online, prompting us to take action. A total of 13 FIRs have been registered against 140 social media handles involved in sharing misleading content,” said Maha Kumbh DIG Vaibhav Krishna. The police’s close watch on social media intensified following the circulation of objectionable videos showing women pilgrims bathing at the Triveni Sangam.
As the Maha Kumbh nears its conclusion, crowds are expected on February 26, coinciding with the Maha Shivratri festival. To manage the massive influx of devotees, DIG Krishna assured that comprehensive arrangements are in place.
"Efforts will be made to ensure that there is no traffic jam in the Maha Kumbh area. No matter how large the crowd gets, we are fully prepared," he emphasised, assuring the public of smooth management.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that 62 crore pilgrims have already visited the Triveni Sangam for a holy dip since the beginning of the Maha Kumbh. On Sunday alone, nearly 8.7 million (87 lakh) pilgrims took part in the ritual.
Security and crowd control measures have been heightened in areas such as the Ayodhya Dham railway station, which sees a large number of pilgrims. Additional security personnel, now numbering over 350, have been deployed to manage the crowd effectively. Barricades have been set up, and a designated holding area has been created for passengers awaiting trains.
